Purpose of the device: in the army it is used mainly for driving cars, landing craft, helicopters, boats. It is included in the combat equipment of the Mi24 helicopter and various types of armored vehicles. The operation of the device is based on the amplification of the weak light of the night sky and rays invisible to the eye (IR, UV), reflected from the road and local objects and converted into an image visible to the eye. Weak light reflected from the road or objects is projected using binocular lenses onto the photocathodes of image intensifier tubes (image intensifier tubes).

Photocathodes are highly sensitive to light. The image on the photocathode of each image intensifier, due to the emission of electrons by the cathode, turns into an electronic image, which, in turn, under the action of a high voltage electric field is transferred to the luminescent screen and focuses on it; electrons hitting the luminescent screen cause it to glow in accordance with the outlines of objects perceived by the lenses optics.

Thus, the electronic image is transformed on the image intensifier screen into a visible image, which is viewed by the observer's eye through the eyepiece. The presence of two tubes in the binocular allows the observer to observe with both eyes with natural periscopicity and a normally perceived depth of perspective.

At levels of natural night illumination significantly below 0.003-0.005 lux, artificial illumination can be used, creating an illumination not exceeding 0.003-0.005 lux. The field of view of the device is not less than 35 degrees.
